The original Walt Disney stamp was issued September 11, 1968, with first-day ceremonies right here in Marceline.

USPS has now shown that stamp reissues can happen. USPS just announced that the 2018 Mister Rogers Forever stamp will be reissued on June 1, 2026. Of course, this doesn’t mean they would reissue the Walt Disney stamp, but it proves they are willing to bring back a past design under the right program.
The attached letter to USPS from the Marceline Tourism Committee, requests a reissue of the 1968 Walt Disney commemorative stamp, or a new “Forever” stamp for the 60th anniversary in 2028.
USPS asks for a three-year lead time, so 2028 would already be tight. (USPS says stamp programs are planned two to three years ahead, and subject ideas should be submitted at least three or more years before the proposed issue year.)
A backup date would be 2031 – the 125th anniversary of Walt Disney’s birth. (Walt was born in 1901, so 2031 gives USPS more time, IF they were to consider our request.)
Along with the request letter, no more than 15 letters of support should be included in the request to USPS. Research shows that variety and credibility are the key. I’ll ask the list of people and organizations below to send me a letter of support to include with the request:
- Missouri elected officials: Governor Mike Kehoe; Sen. Rusty Black, Senate, District 12; Rep. Peggy McGaugh, House, District 7.
- Marceline organizations: City Hall, Downtown Marceline.
- Disney museums: Walt Disney Hometown Museum, Walt Disney’s Carolwood Barn (Carolwood Foundation), Walt Disney Family Museum.
- Disney Imagineers: Bob Gurr, Imagineer; Tony Baxter, Imagineer; Joe Rohde, Imagineer.
- Stamp collecting organizations: American Philatelic Society; American Topical Association.
Once the request letter is sent to USPS, the Marceline Tourism Committee would also post a story on the VisitMarceline.com website to share the project idea, and hopefully get some attention for Marceline among Disney fans.

Dear Members of the Citizens’ Stamp Advisory Committee:
The Marceline Tourism Committee respectfully requests that the Citizens’ Stamp Advisory Committee consider reissuing or adapting the 1968 Walt Disney stamp as part of a future United States Postal Service stamp program.
Ideally, we ask that the Committee consider this subject for 2028 – the 60th anniversary of the original Walt Disney stamp release. If that timing is not practical, we hope the Committee would consider 2031 – the 125th anniversary of Walt Disney’s birth.
Walt Disney’s contributions to American and world culture remain extraordinary and enduring. Through animation, film, television, family entertainment, theme parks, themed design, entrepreneurship, and innovation, Walt helped shape American cultural life and influenced generations around the world.
This request also has a meaningful connection to Marceline, Missouri, Walt Disney’s boyhood hometown. The original 1968 stamp issue ceremonies took place at the Marceline Post Office on September 11, 1968. We would be honored to host reissue ceremonies again as a fitting tribute connected to our community.
We understand that the Postal Service has its own process for reviewing stamp subjects and selecting final designs. We are not submitting artwork or requesting a required design. Rather, we ask that the Committee consider a reissue of the 1968 Walt Disney stamp, or a new Forever stamp inspired by the original.
Walt Disney remains one of the most widely recognized and influential creative figures in American history. A new or reissued Walt Disney stamp would be welcomed by stamp collectors, Disney historians, animation enthusiasts, families, and the many communities connected to Walt Disney’s life and legacy.
This proposal is accompanied by selected letters of support from civic, historical, cultural, and community representatives. Additional letters of support from public officials, organizations, historians, collectors, and members of the public are available upon request or may be submitted separately.
Thank you for your time and consideration. We respectfully ask that this proposal be presented for review as part of the Citizens’ Stamp Advisory Committee’s stamp subject selection process.
Sincerely,
Dave Tavres
