Driven – A John DeLorean Story

Finally… a hollywood movie about John DeLorean. It only took 30+ years. Sadly, most of what people know about John DeLorean is the drivel and fake news of the early 1980s that was intended to sell newspapers. Not much has changed over the years. And, while a movie about DeLorean’s incredible talent as an engineer and boss won’t ever be made, “Driven” is a movie about what people want to see… the scandal made up by the corrupt government, and the sex appeal of the “news.” That said, …

MoviePass – Better Than a Gym Membership

I love business. Especially small business. And I love to see ideas grow from a couple of people at a kitchen table, to something that goes viral. And I especially love seeing one type of business plan applied to something that looks completely different (but actually isn’t.) That’s MoviePass. MoviePass is a month-to-month membership site that (now,) lets you watch an ‘unlimited’ number of movies in the movie theater for the low monthly price of… $9.95. Yes – less than the price of a single ticket. With e-ticketing, …

Netflix bait-and-switch?

I’m a HUGE fan of Netflix. I started with them around 1998, when they only offered DVDs. They were the first major player in what became the streaming video market. Today, I looked up a movie I’ve wanted to see – “Due Date”. When I did the search on Google, the page on the left is what came up… when I hovered over the movie poster, the “Play” icon was displayed, with the text “Start Your Free Trial to Watch”. Once I signed in, I went to play …

Interactive Movies…

In the 1950s there were 3D movies, Smell-O-Vision theaters and CinemaScope. The fad of 3D movies has come back around in the past few years, but I suspect it will go away again. So, what’s a new fad that has yet to come around? How about interactive movies? That is, mobile-enabled films… Movie theaters are using ultra-high-end digital projectors more and more these days. Those projectors are connected to hard drives. Those hard drives are connected to the internet. That means it would be pretty easy to deliver …

Disneyland Outdoor Movie Nights

Several years ago I put together a plan to play movies outdoors at Walt Disney’s Barn. It was a great success. People love coming out and watching movies in a large group, especially when it’s a Disney-related movie. Late last year I was talking to a friend who works at Disneyland and suggested that they do something similar. The Mickey and Friends Parking structure is a huge, multi-level parking lot with an open lot next to it call the Pinocchio lot. This is my proposed area to do …

Facebook feature idea: Check Ins

Facebook has done a good job of letting people “Check In” at businesses with Facebook Places. Aside from seeing if friends are at the same location or even nearby, it’s a great opportunity for businesses to connect with current or potential customers. There is one feature that’s missing though… allowing people to “Check In” to movies and TV shows. Currently, a person can only check in to a business that has an address or location. The GPS functionality in the phone keeps people from randomly checking in to …
